Hugelkulture Bed 2 Started May 2, 2020

Hugelkultur Status – April 23, 2020

The seeds I ordered from Willhite finally came in. We planted mainstream cantaloupe, yellow petite watermelon, jackson wonder speckled bush lima bean, Texas cream 8 cowpea, summer melody squash, honeybaby winter squash, and large sunflower mix on the north side of the bed.

We spread straw over the south side of the hill. The cowpeas, okra, melons, and squash I planted on April 8 are popping out of the soil now.

Hugelkultur – Okra, Comfrey, Cowpeas, Melon, Squash – April 8, 2020

I started planting in the hugelkultur bed today, and it was a little strange. Add a little water and you create an avalanche. So I tried a few things that seemed to work ok.

I took out a handful of soil, replaced it with compost, and planted okra in the compost.

2 Apple Trees and 2 Pawpaw Trees – February 15, 2020

See the GalliStead interactive map for locations. The big apple tree is a 4-in-1 from Bob Wells and has Dorsett Golden, Gorden, Fuji, and Anna varieties. The other apple tree is a Stark Double Delicious and has Stark® Golden Delicious and Starkrimson® Red Delicious. The tree is so small it is hard to tell where it is grafted though. The two Pawpaw trees also came from Stark Bros and are Potomac and Susquehanna.

Hügelkulture Bed Created July 4, 2019

Me, Aiden, and Bryson started moving all the tree trimmings in place to create a hugelkulture bed today. The wood is stacked 2 to 3 foot high, then I’ll add another 2-3 foot of soil on top of that.

Peppers, More Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Melons, and More Planted 4/5/2019

I picked up some pepper plants and another tomato plant from McKinney Feed and Seed yesterday, and planted them today, along with some lime beans and bush beans.  Sometime last week, I planted cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelon.   I took pictures of my new trees also.

Plum Trees, Blackberries, Strawberries Planted 1/31/2019

The order I placed in October from Pense Berry Farm arrived yesterday, so I planted it all today. The blackberries are a special variety bred by the University of Arkansas that grow fruit on the primocane, so they grow fruit the first year. The strawberries Chandler variety and are supposed to withstand southern climates. One of the plum trees is a special variety from Auburn University that is very disease resistant.
