I couldn’t leave it alone! I want the new blackberries to do well, and it bothered me that the oak tree 50ft away was stealing nutrients from my raised beds. So I started digging. Glad I did, more roots than I imagined. The pic shows the trench I dug to break the roots. I have to go back and cut back the roots seen here so I can install root barrier

some of the roots were almost 2 inches in diameter.

most interesting to me is the amount of energy the tree uses to grow horizontal roots near the surface. I would think growing roots deeper would be beneficial, but the tree chooses to burrow under concrete more than burrow down. I didn’t find any root below about 12″ of depth.

Pomegranate Tree Replaced, Mulched Beds 4/20/2019

The Pomegranate Tree I planted last fall didn’t bud or leaf out this spring, so I called Stark Bro’s and they shipped me a new one with zero hassle!  (This was tree 16 shown here)  It was delivered by FedEx today, so I replaced it.

I also picked up one more pepper plant at the CCMGA Plant Sale this morning, along with a few flowers and a thyme plant.  After these were planted, I mulched the beds with leaves.  I still left areas un-mulched where I have seeds planted.

The order I placed in October from Pense Berry Farm arrived yesterday, so I planted it all today. The blackberries are a special variety bred by the University of Arkansas that grow fruit on the primocane, so they grow fruit the first year. The strawberries Chandler variety and are supposed to withstand southern climates. One of the plum trees is a special variety from Auburn University that is very disease resistant.

My order of bare root fruit trees came in today, and I immediately put them in the ground.  I planted them in a pattern I learned about in a the film “The Permaculture Orchard“:  2 fruit trees, followed by a nitrogen fixing tree and prevent two fruit trees of the same type from being close to each other.  The idea is the nitrogen fixing tree will provide for the fruit trees on each side of it, and if one tree gets attacked by pests or diseased, the problem doesn’t easily just jump next door and take out another tree.  I planted at 12 foot intervals, and about half of the trees will be shaded for the first half of the day.  The fruit trees and redbuds came from Womack Nursery in De Leon Texas and the 3 nitrogen fixer trees are on order from Cold Stream Farms in Freesoil, Michigan.
